Evaluating Anti-Aging Treatments
© 2008, Neva J Howell, All Rights ReservedIf you are seeking information about anti-aging treatments, you don't have to look far online to find tons of products, therapies, beauty care and nutritional advice. It is all designed to help you look younger, longer.
CoQ10 is one of the better-known ingredients in a lot of popular antiaging creams but the newest kid on the anti-aging block is idebenone, which is a sort of souped up version of enzyme CoQ10.
With so many choices, how does one begin to know which products really deliver? I have a few rules on skincare:
I look for all natural or organic.
I look for low preservative ingredients or no preservatives.
I also look for products that have antioxidants among the ingredients.
I am not shy about contacting the company directly if I have a concern either.
It's no mistake that most beauty products advertised as anti-aging treatments are also promoted as antioxidants. Turns out that antioxidants are powerful, natural anti-aging ingredients that, when added to beauty products, impart their youth-giving properties to the skin.
I have only now, as I enter my 50's, begun to appreciate the truth of that old adage....you are only as young as you feel. Looking back on my younger years, I realize that I actually feel better now than I did then, amazing as that may sound.
Healthy eating and healthier living is a big part of the reason I feel better now, and a big part of the educational focus on this site because no health supplement, anti-aging treatment or prescription drug for that matter, can take the place of a healthy diet.
Healthy Skin Tips:
Proper Cell Hydration: Having healthy skin starts with proper hydration of the cells. You must drink enough water to allow your kidneys, liver, spleen and colon performing their important, perpetual cleansing work. Inadequate water intake is the number one reason for unhealthy skin, in my opinion. Water is also directly related to skin care in that using unfiltered water to shower in deposits chlorine on the skin, which has a drying effect and is also toxic to delicate facial tissues.Since the skin is our largest eliminatory organ, it is vital that we keep the skin clear of toxins. Drinking chlorinated water hampers the body from staying clean through the added burden on eliminatory organs to remove the chlorine. And finally, drinking alkaline water is best because it assists the body in maintaining a health alkaline ph. Having an alkaline ph puts the body in the optimal state for healthy functioning, elimination and regeneration.
Leave the make-up off: I use natural make-up (Rachel Perry, usually) but I also never wear make-up unless I need to be made up. If you are one of those women who feels naked without her makeup, you may put it on even if you are not going anywhere. Try leaving it off. Let the skin breathe. And of course, never go to bed with makeup on...not even the natural makeups. Let the skin breathe.
Up your antioxidants. As I mentioned before, a lot of the same skin care products that address anti-aging contain antioxidants. But you don't have to buy an anti-aging product to get antioxidants into your skin. Get them on your face from the inside out. Some powerful anti-oxidants include grapeseed extract, mangosteen juice, goji, acai, kombucha, COQ10 and, surprisingly enough......blueberries.
That's right. Blueberries can provide powerful antioxidant protection. In fact, blueberries are being talked about in the health community at large because of their superior antiaging and antioxidant properties. Discover why adding the antiaging power of blueberries to your diet can help you with your antiaging goals.
Non-Invasive Antiaging Treatments
There are less invasive treatments emerging which give women options besides cosmetic surgery, facelifts, etc. but none of the non-invasive anti-aging treatments I read about on Oprah's website sounded like a good time to me.One cosmetic procedure, called a thread lift, actually results in threads being inserted underneath the skin to pull the skin taut.
Afterwards, those "threads" stay there, underneath the skin. Just doesn't sound like anything my skin would want there. But, if a facelift is the only option in woman's mind, I can see where this wouldn't be nearly so invasive a choice.
There was also some information about a procedure called fat transfer, which is exactly what it sounds like. Fat is transferred from one part of the body to another. I've actually heard of this one as it's been the brunt of jokes on sitcoms....."she's wearing her butt on her face now" is one I recall.
I'm not saying these options won't work for some women but I'm definitely saying they won't work for me so I have find other avenues of approach and, in my case, that's nutrition, healthy skin care and cleansing products, maintaining proper hydration and alkaline ph and other lifestyle changes such as exercise, deep breathing, etc. that are youth-giving from the inside out.
