Although there are thousands of different herpes strains that have been identified, there are only 8 herpes virus strains that cause trouble for humans, according to the latest medical info I could find online. Those herpes strains are:
1. Herpes Simplex Virus I: Cold Sores
2. Herpes Simplex Virus II: Genital Herpes
3. Varicella Zoster Virus: Chicken Pox, Shingles
4. Human Herpes Virus 6: Roseola
5. Human Herpes Virus 8: Kaposi's Sarcoma
6. Epstein-Barr Virus
8. Human B-Lymphotropic Virus
I used to link to an article at the University of South Carolina and that's where I gleaned some of the information above about different strains of the herpes virus. However, on a recent visit, I see the article is no longer linked from the previous page and I was unable to find it again.
Interesting tidbit: According to the above-mentioned resource, you cannot catch herpes from a toilet seat. OK, but I still wipe down the seat before I sit down. The article says the reason you can't catch herpes from a toilet seat is because the virus is what is called an "enveloped virus".
Basically, that means for all the havoc herpes wreaks, it is a very fragile virus and falls apart quickly. If you did catch it from a surface, it would have to be that you sat down on it immediately, and I mean immediately, after an infected person got up.
Natural Antiviral Healing Oils Update: New FDA / FTC regulations on std treatment for the Herpes Strains causing hsv1 and hsv2 infections in humans. Companies may no longer claim natural treatments for herpes effective. Note that this ban does not mean there are no effective antivirals; it means they have not been proven effective. Why? I'm sure it has nothing to do with money. The Federal Trade Commission is involved. Hmmmm. The FTC involved in matters concerning health and healing. I'm sure it has nothing to do with money.
