Balancing ph Levels

What is acidosis?
The ph level of a healthy individual will be slightly alkaline. While it is normal for ph levels to rise and fall during the day, due to a number of factors include what foods are consumed, it is not normal or healthy to have a sustained acidic ph level. This is called acidosis. Although the simple definition of acidosis is having excess acid in the body fluids, or a ph level that is below 6.8, there are different types of acidosis:

Metabolic acidosis (usually points to kidneys and requires medical testing to see if kidney function is ok)

Lactic acidosis (can be the result of strenuous exercise leading to a build-up of lactic acid, a temporary condition or a more serous situation. Medical evaluation advised if symptoms persist or are troubling

Symptoms of metabolic acidosis may include:
* Confusion
* Lack of energy
* Shortness of breath
* Yellowing of skin
* Poor appetite
* Restless or poor sleep

Symptoms of serious lactic acidosis may be subtle at first but eventually can include nausea, vomiting and other symptoms. Lactic acidosis that has progressed to a health threat may be fatal so early diagnosis and treatment is important if you suspect you may have this health condition. Other forms of acidosis include diabetic acidosis and respiratory acidosis.

Diabetic acidosis is a life-threatening health condition that most often affects diabetics with Type I Diabetes. The diabetes drug metformin has been linked to the development of diabetic acidosis in some cases. Diabetes Health Articles

Respiratory acidosis is an acidic condition resulting from decreased respiration which causes a build-up of carbon dioxide in the body. Respiratory acidosis can cause confusion, fatique, shortness of breath, etc.

How acidosis is diagnosed:

Medical diagnosis is needed to determine the type of acidosis a person may have, once it manifests chronically and causes a health concern. A medical test called Chem-20 can usually confirm acidosis although other tests may be needed to track down the cause.

How to balance your ph levels:

Everyone's ph levels fluctuate during the day, depending on food choices, prescription or recreational drugs used, dehydration, etc. but a chronic acid ph level becomes dangerous over time. Keeping a slightly alkaline ph level helps the body maintain health and vitality. There are many ways to balance ph levels.

Drinking alkaline water is one way to keep ph levels alkaline; you may want to consider using a water ionizer or adding a water additive such as such as WaterOz water drops, to alkalize water you drink.

A diet rich in foods which are naturally high-alkaline, such as spinach, almonds, barleygrass juice, figs, raisins, etc may also be helpful in maintaning an alkaline ph balance as will reducing intake of acid-forming foods such as beef, peanuts, coffee, beer, pineapples, white rice, white breads, etc.
