The ginger rhizome is used safely as a spice in Asian and oriental dishes. It is additionally a well-known remedy for indigestion, upset stomach, nausea and motion sickness. I love a nice ginger tea for sore throat or flu too. Also, ginger is quite the parasite killer! Ginger appears to be effective against roundworms and flatworms, and even Schistosoma.

While generally considered safe, ginger side effects are typically mild. However, it is always possible that more serious side effects may occur with any health supplement, prescription drug or food and there are a few important cautions below about using ginger in specific situations. One side effect I personally experience when I ingest too much ginger tea or supplements containing ginger is heart palpitations.

A partial list of potential ginger side effects may include:
* Mouth irriation - may switch to capsules if an issue
* Bloating
* Heartburn
* Gastrointestinal Disturbances
* Heart Palpitations / Arrythmia

While typically having a stomach-settling activity for most, ginger is a warming herb and may sometimes cause gastrointestinal distress. Discontinue use if this side effect occurs. In addition to side effects, ginger may also cause interactions with certain substances, in particular anesthesia, analgesics and blood thinners. If on medications or going in for surgery, do not use ginger before talking with your doctor and pharmacist about possible side effects or interactions.

Side effects of ginger with certain analgesics or blood thinners:
Excessive bleeding is the only interaction I found but that does not mean it is the only interaction that is possible. Check with your doctor if on any type of prescription medication, and particularly if your meds target some of the same health challenges that ginger is used for in natural healing circles.

Special cautions - Side effects of ginger, when used with anesthesia, or other surgical medications, may include:

* Increased Bleeding
* Difficulty coming out of sedation
* Heartbeat irregularity
* Light and / or Sun Sensitivity

Aspirin is a blood thinner: I'm not just talking about prescription drug thinners like Coumadin and Plavix which should be considered before taking ginger. Although it is an over-the-counter medicine, aspirin is a blood-thinner, too, so talk to doctor before using aspirin with ginger or even eating ginger in foods.
